Preservation

restoration-awardPreservation Awards:

Every year, SPI sponsors a Preservation Awards Program created by the Preservation Committee to honor citizens who had contributed in some way to architectural preservation in the Bath Area. In 1999 the awards program was expanded into three categories.

Category I- Individual:

    • Includes individuals who have lovingly and meticulously restored their homes to their original appearance, keeping in mind today’s modern necessities.

Category II- Commercial:

    • Encompasses corporate or business owners, who have either built, maintained, or restored their downtown buildings in keeping with Bath’s nineteenth century character.

Category III-Friend of Preservation:

    • This person or group of persons may not own an old home but they have contributed either valuable professional expertise or considerable volunteer time to the cause of preservation.

House Plaques:

SPI will design a house plaque for your Bath area home. We have two sizes, 12”x 8” and 18”x 8”. It has a warm grey background with black letters with a dark wine stripe. The cost to you is $100.00. Print out the downloadable form and mail with a check to Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc., Box 322, Bath, ME. Try to give us as much information as possible. If you haven’t done the research yourself, SPI can do it for you for a small fee. It is important that we get your most recent deed number.

Historic District Architectural Review Committee (HDARC):

This committee was established according to guidelines from Bath’s Comprehensive Plan and in conjunction with the City of Bath Planning Office. It consists of 5 or 6 members from SPI who review any alterations, or additions to property in Bath’s Historic District. We have worked to assist home owners in maintaining the flavor of the historic district without undue expense.

Bath Walking Tour Maps:

The preservation Committee is responsible for the printing and updating of these maps which are given out free to the public. The Bath Area Bed and Breakfast Association has helped defray the cost of extra printing. These maps may be found at the Bath Chamber of Commerce, The Maine Maritime Museum, and at the numerous B & B’s throughout the Bath area.

House Covenants:

SPI is steward for one property in Bath, administered by the Preservation Committee. We offer guidance if you wish to place covenants on your home, but at this point in time we cannot take on the stewardship of any more property, unless it is adequately endowed.

Color and Design Assistance:

SPI is prepared to help you with paint colors, external and internal. We can make suggestions to exterior and interior restorations. We can refer you to a long list of restoration resources in the State of Maine and New England.
