Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc. is dedicated to the preservation of buildings possessing architectural and historic merit in Sagadahoc County, Maine; to educating the public about those historic buildings; to maintaining the Winter Street Center for community use.
Built in 1843 by master builder Anthony Coombs Raymond, the Winter Street Church in Bath, Maine—pictured at left (photo by Jeff Cutler)—is one of New England’s finest examples of American Gothic Revival wooden architecture.
Today, the building lives on as the Winter Street Center—a distinctive and historic venue available for event rentals, including weddings, performances, meetings, and private celebrations. It is already home to the Maine Songwriters and Musicians Concert Series and the launch site for Bath’s annual Historic Homes & Gardens Tour.
With planned renovations, the Winter Street Center will become a fully accessible, year-round community hub, expanding its use for nonprofit programs, civic gatherings, educational events, and cultural partnerships. These improvements will not only preserve an architectural treasure, but also strengthen community connection, cultural vitality, and economic activity in downtown Bath—ensuring the Center serves the region for generations to come.
Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc. was founded in 1971 initially for the purpose of saving Bath’s Winter Street Congregational Church building from destruction. Our efforts also restored The Chocolate Church on Washington Street and supported ongoing preservation and restoration of Bath’s 19th-century downtown area. SPI played a major role in establishing two federally designated National Register Historic Districts that encompass the central business district and residential areas of Bath, Maine, the City of Ships. Today, we run several initiatives celebrating and preserving our community’s architectural heritage. We hope you will join us as a member or participant in any of our public programs.
