Who we are:
Sagadahoc Preservation, Inc. (SPI), is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the preservation of buildings possessing architectural or historic merit. SPI was founded in 1971, first, to save a city landmark, the Winter Street Church, from scheduled demolition and, second, to support the preservation of Bath’s distinctive architectural legacy increasingly threatened by loss.
What we do:
Since its formation, SPI has been instrumental in preserving the “Chocolate Church,” a fine Gothic Revival structure now housing the Center for the Arts; has begun the South End Survey, a meticulous investigation and recordation of buildings and their residents on the south end of Bath; and has recently completed much of the renovation of the Winter Street Church to the point where it is open for community activities. SPI has completed an architectural survey of all buildings built in Bath before 1920 and the first draft of a long overdue book on the history of the Bath area’s architecture. Two federally designated National Register Historic District as well as a city historic district exist in Bath due directly to the efforts of SPI. SPI continues to provide an educational program in Bath’s architecture to fourth grade students in the public schools.
SPI’s mission is to preserve and maintain the Bath area’s fine architectural heritage through the creation of an historic district commission, the promotion of stewardship, and the use of protective covenants. Our primary goal is to continue educational programs on architectural heritage in the Bath area schools and to provide an architectural awareness to general public.

Consider presenting a gift membership to a family member, a friend, a new or old neighbor, or a client. Active membership in a community organization works for the recipient as a way to meet new people of similar tastes, to stimulate an interest in their community, and to learn more about their community.
